The Annamalai University is a unitary, teaching, and residential university. It was founded by the munificence of the farsighted and noble hearted philanthropist and patron of letters the late Honble Dr. Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar of Chettinad, Kt, LL.D., D.Litt. He started several colleges, and ultimately, the University in 1929. Since its inception, it has progressively tried to realize the aims of the noble Founder Pro-Chancellor.After him, his illustrious son, Padma Bhushan Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar of Chettinad, was the Pro-Chancellor from 1948 to 1984, and he sedulously nurtured the growth and development of the University. The present Pro-Chancellor Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy, a philanthropist and a patron of sports, is the distinguished son of Dr. Rajah Sir Muthiah Chettiar. The University has had the unique good fortune of having a succession of eminent Vice-Chancellors to guide its destinies. During the last eighty two years the University has grown rapidly and has consolidated its position as a unitary and residential University with forty-nine Departments of Study and over 3240 members on its teaching staff. Annamalainagar is already a busy and full-fledged University town, east of Chidambaram, the abode of Lord Nataraja. The University campus, including the colleges, hostels, and playgrounds, occupies an area of about thousand acres.


The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has accredited Annamalai University at the 'B++' (80 85) level among the universities.

Alagappa University was brought into existence by a Special Act of the Government of Tamil Nadu in May 1985 with the objective of fostering research, development and dissemination of knowledge in various branches of learning. Alagappa University is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. The University has 18 Departments, 5 Centres and 2 Constituent Colleges on its campus. 28 Affiliated Colleges located in the districts of Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram are part of the University.


As a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), as well as the member of the Association of Common Wealth Universities (ACU), it has rewarding relations with other academic institutions, research laboratories and industrial establishments that promise a spectacular feature.

CMJ University was established at Shillong by the Government of Meghalaya in July 2009 under the provision of the CMJ University Act 2009 (Act 4 of 2009) covering 200 acres of land and 16000 square feet of infrastructure. The trust is currently developing 5 engineering colleges.


The CMJ University is recognized by UGC and empowered to award degrees as specified by the UGC as per notification F.No. 8-21/2010 (CPP-1/PU) Dated 25th November 2010. EIILM University, Sikkim, India is fully recognized and approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is established under Sikkim State Legislature Act No 4, 2006 Government of Sikkim. The Act received assent of the Governor on March 24, 2006 that was published under the Government of Sikkim, Gazette Notification No. 28/LD/2006 dated April 3, 2006.

The Periyar University was established by the Act No.45 of Government of Tamil Nadu in 1997. The University is named after a renowned Social Reformer popularly called Thanthai Periyar. The University campus extends to about 100 acres accommodating the administrative and department buildings. The University is one among those recognized by University Grants Commission for receiving grants as per section 12B of UGC Act. It is a member of Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.


The Periyar University has established a directorate for distance education namely PERIYAR INSTITUTUE OF DISTANCE EDUCATION (PRIDE). The PRIDE has been started functioning from the year 2001-2002. The PRIDE offers various undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The course materials are supplied to the students well in advance. There are about 54 PCP Centers throughout the Country. Well qualified and experienced faculties are involved in the classroom teaching . The Periyar University has also introduced its off Campus regular academic programmes from the academic year 2005 - 06 through PRIDE.

Vinayaka Missions had its inception in the year 1981 with the establishment of the Thirumuruga Kirupananda Variyar Thavathiru Sundara Swamigal (TKVTSS) Medical Educational and Charitable Trust. Not far from then, in 1982, the Founder-Chairman, Dr. A Shanmugasundaram instituted the Vinayaka Missions College of Pharmacy in Salem, the pioneer institution of Vinayaka Missions. In the year 2001 the "University" status was conferred on Vinayaka Missions by The Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, with the recommendations of the UGC (Established Under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956) as an acknowledgement of its excellence, satisfaction of the highest level of academic standards and best infrastructural facilities provided to achieve pre-eminence in education and by virtue of this recognition Vinayaka Missions transcended to becoming Vinayaka Missions University (VMU) as the 48th University in India.

Karnataka State Open University plays a significant role in promoting the desired growth of higher education through Open-distance learning system (ODL). Our country will be a super power only when it achieves the targeted growth of higher education, which is possible by the intervention of open and distance learning.


The University having a strong genesis of the Institute of Correspondence Course and Continuing Course and Continuing Education (ICC&CE), a pioneer in the Asian continent, was established in 1996 under the state enactment KSOU Act 1992. As lucidly inscribed in its motto Higher Education to Everyone Everywhere, which focuses on providing distance education KSOU is evolving the strategies of distance learning to reach the door-steps of the students not only in the state of Karnataka but also in the country and abroad. For this purpose, KSOU has established regional centres, even in abroad.

Mahatma Gandhi University (M.G.U) is established through Meghalaya State legislative Act, 2010 (Meghalaya Act No.6 of 2011), published in the Gazette of Meghalaya vide No.LL (B).138/2010/41. The Promoting body of MGU has vast experience in the field of Education. University is setup with an objective of providing best quality education to the students.

Manav Bharti University established in 2009 under the H.P. Private University (Establishment & Regulation) Act is, owned by Manav Bharti Charitable Trust with the aim to advance and disseminate the knowledge and maintain highest standard of learning through teaching, research, extension education programme and conceptual aspects relevant to the need of the state. Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU), named after the famous Tamil Scholar Professor P. Sundaram Pillai, was established on 7 September, 1990 to cater to the long felt needs of the people of the three southern most districts of Tamil Nadu namely Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari. The University has under its jurisdiction 61 affiliated colleges, 5 Mano Colleges and 1 Constituent College, with 65,000 students on rolls.


The University Grants Commission, New Delhi, an apex higher education body of the Union Government, has accorded its approval for getting financial assistance since 29 March 1994. The University has been accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council of India with five star status. The University Act authorizes the functioning of Directorate of Distance and Continuing Education outside the university jurisdiction and the courses offered through this mode are recognized by the Distance Education Council of India.
